Opens in 2028
Regent Karuizawa is a planned 58-key onsen retreat in the historic town of Karuizawa, in Nagano Prefecture. IHG announced it on 18 September 2025 as the Regent brand's first resort location in Japan and gave 2028 as the opening year, with no month. The same release says Regent Kyoto is set to open earlier in 2028, which makes Karuizawa the brand's second entry in Japan.
Kengo Kuma is the architect. The hotel is described as immersed in lush forest, with hot springs and views of Mount Asama, and it will offer a choice of rooms and villas. The release names a specialty restaurant with valley views, a wellness centrepiece built around the signature spa and onsen, meeting spaces and a gym.
IHG presents Karuizawa as a year-round destination, with scenic waterfalls, old streets, accessible ski resorts and a selection of Japan's famous golf courses. It gives the distance from Tokyo as approximately one hour by Shinkansen.
The operator's wording, “when it opens in 2028”, was read on its own page and last checked 31 October 2026.
